As a teacher, there is a shift that starts in May.
We move from “Teach them that” and start to check “Have they retained ANY of what I taught them?”
It can sometimes be a discouraging time of year.
But it is also funny and cute at the same time.
Last week we did a district writing assessment. The students were asked to pick a special object and write a descriptive report on it explaining what it looked like, where it came from and why it was so special.
One of my little girl’s chose to write about me. There was no dissuading her, I was her special object…and once kids get something in their head it is VERY hard to change their trajectory.
Clearly I have not taught her enough about punctuation and the ever useful skill of editing and reading over one’s work to make sure it is clear…sigh! At least she loves me and thinks I’m the best right?
We have more of these assessments on the horizon, and I hope to ingrain a few more key concepts into these 8 year olds before then. Wish me luck!
