Wow! September is almost over. As a teacher I always find that September is a crazy month and it usually flies by, but this year seemed to go exceptionally fast. Maybe it’s being at a new school, getting to know new routines and new faces.
This last week was especially exciting for two reasons.
1. We had a bat in our school.
One day after recess the kids from my class came to me and said they heard there was a bat in the gym. In my best teacher voice I told them that that probably wasn’t true….
I was wrong. It was true.
Unfortunately it did not stay in the gym and one day after school it went flying around the library and our classroom wings. It finally ended up in one of our classrooms swooping at the teacher as he tried to hit it with his textbook. After he made it out and a few other teachers had a pow wow about how to get that thing out of the room and back outside where it belonged, they grabbed some butterfly nets (seriously, children’s butterfly nets) and marched back to deal with the bat.
All I could think about during the whole thing was the office episode where there is a bat in the office…
2. We participated in the Terry Fox Run as a school.
This was so fun to watch all the kids learn, first off, who Terry Fox was and why he ran. We all donned our runners and set out to get a little exercise and raise some money for cancer research. As our assistant principal was halfway through the first lap he heard a little boy behind him exclaim in a somewhat melodramatic tone “Now I know what Terry Fox felt like!”

One of Andrew’s very good friends was in town last week and we had the opportunity to do supper together on Thursday. The two guys decided we should go out for dinner than eat the coconut curry chick peas that were on the meal plan. I wonder why….
This is a classic dish in our house, and really one of my favourites. It’s been a while since we have had pineapple meatballs so I thought I would dust off the recipe and make these again.
I still have leftover teriyaki meatballs in the freezer that I want to use up. It makes supper so much easier when the prep work is already done.
Andrew loves the chicken, brie and fig jam sandwich from Earls, and we have been talking about attempting to make them here at home for weeks. Well last week I searched through my beloved Superstore and found fig Cabernet wine jelly…it is going to be the perfect compliment to this sandwich! I thought it also had pear on it…but upon further investigation it is actually apple. I bought pears, so maybe I will throw caution to the wind and add them on to the sandwich too.
