Cheesy Pizza Pasta

School’s out for another year!

It is always a little bittersweet when the year ends…and though the kids are completely unruly at the end of the year, they still do the sweetest things.

Now to just relax, spend time with family and friends and check all those little projects off my list.


I found this recipe on Pinterest and it grabbed my attention right away because of Andrew’s enduring love for anything pizza. And since I love him so much, I thought I would add it to our repertoire.

Cheesy Pizza Pasta

Here is what you need:

  • Italian sausage
  • pepperoni slices (30 in total)
  • 14 oz pizza sauce
  • 1 box penne pasta
  • garlic powder
  • Italian seasoning
  • salt
  • pepper
  • 1.5 cups shredded cheese

The original recipe said to use an oven proof skillet so that you can melt the cheese at the end, but the thought of having to CLEAN my cast iron skillet outweighed the allure of melted cheese. So I went for my deep stainless steel frying pan with a lid instead.

I started by browning the Italian sausage in the pan until it was cooked through.

I added 2/3 of the pepperoni slices and let those heat through.

Next I added the pizza sauce, 2 cups of water, the penne, minced garlic (instead of powder since I didn’t have any), Italian seasoning, and salt and pepper. I stirred it up, put a lid on it and let it cook, stirring occasionally for 15 minutes.

Do not forget to stir it every now and then…or else you will just have a burned on mess!

Finally I added the rest of the pepperoni slice and the cheese and let everything melt together.

I served this with a little Parmesan cheese and some parsley flakes.

The Verdict- The flavor of this is great!┬áBut I would definitely cook the pasta separately next time. It would save us from eating (very) al dente pasta and having to scrub the pan for 15 minutes after dinner trying to get all those burned on bits off. Next time I would consider using hot Italian sausage too for a little more kick and if I wanted to health this up a little I may add some mushrooms and green peppers too to make me feel like I’m getting some veggies in. All in all, a win.
