Making a Charcuterie Board

My sister is getting married this summer! Naturally, when someone gets married you throw them a shower.

And obviously there must be food…

Now typical shower food is little sandwiches, fruit and veggies and some sort of dessert. There might even be a meat and cheese tray or some dips, but I got it in my head to do something that we had never tried before (much to my mother’s dismay I am sure since she was in charge of purchasing everything)

This is where the idea of a charcuterie board came in.

Charcuterie Board

Charcuterie literally means cold cooked meats…and that is really what the board has on it.

We bought a large cutting board and my mother bravely navigated the local Italian supermarket to come up with something I think looked very pretty and tasted amazing!

We started with all the accompaniments. Pearl onions, pickles, pickled asparagus, almonds, olives and an apricot Riesling jelly.

Next came the meats and cheeses. My mom just bought a whole bunch of yummy looking things like pepperoni, salami, prosciutto and Serrano ham.¬†She bought some herb flavored soft cheese, cranberry Stilton, fresh mozzarella and jalapeno cheddar. To appeal to those who are not very adventurous (and there are a few in my family…including my mom) she also bought a big brick of orange cheddar and some ham sausage so there was something recognizable for those who frighten easily.

This was so great! It looked beautiful and the meats and cheeses tasted amazing! We served it with various crackers and sliced baguettes. I look forward to the next time I can make one of these….anyone want to come over?
