Gooey Puffed Wheat Squares

After 9 years of teaching, you think I wouldn’t be surprised when kids don’t listen.

Most of the time it enrages me when I have to repeat myself 47 times before everyone hears what I say. ( I promise though, I hold it together….most times….sometimes I act like a bit of a crazy person, but those moments are rare.)

Thankfully sometimes when kids don’t totally listen, it turns into a very funny conversation. Maybe that makes it easier to handle the other times when I find it less funny…

On Thursday I had an opportunity to share the finished artwork with the students that Andrew had re-drawn and cleaned up for our mugs.

As I was showing them, I said something along the lines of “It’s great that we have Mr. Skinner around to work his magic and get all these things ready for us. It would have been so much harder to do without him.”

As students started working, a little boy (who is notorious for day dreaming and playing this stuff in his desk when I am talking) comes up to me and says

“Does Mr. Skinner really do magic for his job?”

No…no he does not.

I can only imagine the¬†picture of Andrew in his mind….with a top hat and magic wand doing magic tricks at his job…funny stuff right?

We are going to a party tomorrow and I offered to make some goodies to share with the crowd. I have a big bag of puffed wheat in my pantry so I thought I would try to make puffed wheat squares.

I have never made them before because I am scared.

I’m scared because my mom made them growing up and hers never stuck together. We always ate it out of a bowl with a spoon….it was delicious, but it wasn’t sticky and gooey. So to me, puffed wheat seems HARD.

It’s time to get over my fears…

I found a good recipe and got down to it.

I started by combining the following ingredients in a saucepan:

  • 1/2 margarine
  • 1 cup of corn syrup
  • 1 cup of white sugar
  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar
  • 6 heaping tablespoons of cocoa powder

I brought it up to a boil, removed it from the heat and added in a splash of vanilla.


In a separated bowl I had already measured out 10 cups of puffed wheat and I poured the gooey cocoa mixture over it.

I mixed it well and pressed it into a greased 9 x 13 pan.

The Verdict-Oh dear these are good! I am no longer afraid to make puffed wheat squares…just that I will eat them all.
